Parker Mah - 2006/7 (Canada)

What were you studying/where were you working?

I had finished a degree in Asian Studies and thereafter was working as a jazz pianist and a radio show host on CJSF Radio 90.1 FM in Vancouver. Whilst being at Bush Radio, I was interning in the news department with Nadia Samie and Busi Mtabane and I also helped out in the music library.

What are you currently doing (Work, studies, etc)?

I am currently running the workshops and working as a training coordinator at Citizen Shift citizenshift.org which is an online alternative multimedia platform that encourages citizen participation through media. I'm developing a series of workshops on media literacy for smaller, underserved communities around Quebec. I also work in the post-production department at the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling at Concordia University. And, of course, I am still rocking the airwaves with world music and jazz on CKUT 90.3 FM Montreal.

Most memorable experience at Bush Radio

My most memorable experience at Bush Radio, was the wonderful opportunity I was granted to be able to be exposed to tons of great music and learning from all the staff and volunteers including, Wesley, Bassie, Victor Jay, and Zane. I was also privileged to spend a week on Robben Island with over 100 youth at the MKK in 2006. The idea of using such a historic site as a space for positive expression, together with the creativity and energies of all the youth and mentors made the event unforgettable.

Most memorable experience of South Africa

I enjoyed parading through Cape Town to the City Hall at 3am in the morning to celebrate the victory of the Pennsylvanians after their win at the Athlone Stadium of the “Kaapse Klopse” Competition. I recall the street being decorated with the team’s colours and I also remember receiving props for being the only Chinese in the team.
