What were you studying/where were you working?

International Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam, in Netherlands

What are you currently doing?

I am working at a communications office in the international development aid field in the Netherlands, and at this present moment I am involved with The Hunger Project. In the past I have done work at Bush Radio, which included an organised workshop with “Brasse Vannie Kaap” in the Dutch Youth Prison.

Most memorable experience of Bush Radio

When I started at the station the war in Iraq had just broken out, this was indeed a memorial experience because I was fortunate enough to be part of the station’s protests which took place on the streets. We recorded a South African version of John Lennon’s song 'Give peace a chance' with children from a school in the neighbourhood, which was played during the entire week. Bush Radio also had t-shirts and billboards with the print 'Bush against war' which raised many questions and discussions.

Furthermore I also enjoyed engineering with Victor J for the morning show. I also recall Victor and myself getting lost in Langa at 5.30 in the morning, which resulted in both of us being late for the show.

Most memorable experience of South Africa?

I can confidently say that I enjoyed the openness, friendliness and humour of the South African people. I immediately fell in love with the “rainbow nation” and basically everything that Cape Town had to offer. It was also interesting to experience how well Bush Radio is known worldwide. I indeed feel very proud that I had been a part of it at one stage in my life and I wish Bush Radio all the best for the future.
